Specialized's Epic Expert Carbon 29er is ready for XC domination — from World Cup racing to blowing by your riding buddies on after-work hammerfests, and even epic adventures away from home. This carbon rocket features 100mm of Specialized's world-renowned, Brain-controlled FSR rear suspension that delivers hardtail-like efficiency on smooth sections and fully active, plush travel on technical terrain. Its RockShox SID fork boasts 100mm of trail-smoothing precision thanks to Brain technology as well. 2x10 Shimano/SRAM gearing with an XTR Plus rear derailleur are powered by svelte SRAM carbon cranks to give you all the push you'll need and more. When it's time to slow down to earthly speeds, Magura's discs get it done, while the carbon Roval 29er wheels track the trail with ease. Top it off with a sweet selection of Specialized components including their Command Post XCP dropper post holding a ti-railed Phenom saddle and it's easy to see how dominate this bike really is.

I have the 2011 version of this bike, which seems still similar enough to review it. My experience with this bike was very positive, it is surprisingly solid for a super light fully and so far never gave me a problem. The suspension is ideal for XC racing and especially, long endurance races. I use their super-light carbon wheels for racing, and these wheels make the bike feel like a rocket. The only alternative I would consider to Epic for XC racing is a high end 29er hardtail, as these are noticeably lighter and cheaper. However, if you're older and/or race longer distances, this is imho the best machine out there. For normal trail riding, I would get a longer travel bike.
I own a 2012 Epic Expert Carbon and I want to order a 2014 so I compared the geometry of the 2012 Epic with 2014 and there is a problem with the actual top tube length. It is 3 cm longer in 2014 whereas the Wheelbase and Effective Top Tube Length is only 3-4mm longer. The Seat Tube and Head tube angles are basically the same and the chainstays length is not different. I am not talking about the 2014 World Cup Edition that has a different geometry. As you can see below the Top tube length of a 2014 medium Epic is longer than the Top tube length of a 2013 Large Epic and the top tube of a 2014 Small Epic is equal to a 2013 Medium Epic... How is it possible ? 2014 Top Tube Length, Actual : 559mm (s), 587mm (m), 614mm (L) 2013 Top Tube Length, Actual : 527mm (s), 559mm (m), 584mm (L) Effective top tube length and Actual top tube length cannot be so closed, so where is the mistake ? 2014 Top Tube Length, Horizontal : 564mm (s), 593mm (m), 620mm (L) 2014 Top Tube Length, Actual : 559mm (s), 587mm (m), 614mm (L)
This is a great bike and the suspension feels much more than the 100mm because of the 29er wheels. Best bike I have ever owned! Only complaint is the brakes howl easily!
